Report of the workshop "Gender in the Quran" Scientific secretary of the meeting: Dr. Sedigheh Shakoori Rad
This workshop was organized by the Scientific Department of Religious and Legal Studies of the Center for Women and Family Studies of the University of Tehran to introduce this group to the interested community. This meeting was held virtually, freely and free of charge in three sessions on January 19, March 2 and March 9, 2022. The lecturer was Dr. Shahriyar Niazi, an associate professor at the University of Tehran. Due to his expertise in linguistics and Arabic, he discussed the topic of "gender in the Qur'an".
In the third session, the theories of linguists such as Michael Halliday and Ruqaiya Hassan, which were explained in semantics, were mentioned. Also, this theory is based on the two concepts of cohesion and coherence.
Then, using the method of text coherence analysis as a case, verse 3 of Surah An-Nisa 'about polygamy was analyzed and analyzed.
In this analysis, by fragmenting the text of the surah and semantic concentration in the first 34 verses of the surah, it was revealed that there is a semantic coherence and textual coherence in these verses. The issue is specifically about the families who have lost their guardians and the concern for the preservation of the property of the orphans.
This verse proposes the option of marrying the mothers of these children to prevent the collapse of the family system affected by the death of the father, with conditions and conditions, in order to protect the property of the orphans and also to solve the problem of their homelessness and to ensure their livelihood. He says that if you do not have the ability to pay and justice and you may be infected with oppression, be content with a stable or unstable monogamy and do not enter into this process.
It seems that the verse is not about announcing the permission or recommending polygamy for all men, but in addition to economic justice regarding the property of the affected family, the issue of social justice and responsibility in supporting such families has been considered in the Qur'an.
